Class Transition / Mat Age Bands
Note: Ages are a guide only, other factors may be taken into consideration
1st Mat (Age from 5, up to 10 )
(However, at age 5 must be able to understand and receive instruction)
Those not deemed ready will be asked to postpone joining the mat for 3/6 months
(Due to safety precautions for both the child and for other children on the mat)
Generally, a child will move to the 2nd mat when aged at around 10 years old

2nd Mat (Age from 10 , up to 16)
Players transitioning from the 1st mat will be required to have reached a certain level of competency in order for them to fully participate and benefit from the more advanced coaching on this mat

3rd / Senior Mat (Age from 14/15 at the discretion of the club coaches)
1st Mat to 2nd Mat Transition
Transition from the 1st mat to the 2nd mat will be based on a number of factors which includes age, ability, behaviour and coaches discretion. On top of this, to fully benefit from the more advanced coaching, they will be required to understand the following terminology and able to understand and perform the following techniques:
Terminology: Rei, Hajime, Matte, Sore-made, Osae-komi, Toketa, Dojo, Judogi, Randori, Uchikomi
Techniques: Rolling Breakfall, Osoto-Otoshi, Osoto-Gari, O-goshi, Uki-Goshi, Tai-Otoshi, Ippon-seoi-nage
Kesa-Gatame, Mune-Gatame, Kuzure-Kesa-Gatame
Escape from Kesa-Gatame, Turnover into Hold down
Transition will occur over a period of 8 weeks, where the child will attend the 1st mat, as well as join in the 2nd mat warm up (to begin with), building up to joining in the whole of the 2nd mat, and subsequently (if the child and the coaches feel confident) leave the 1st mat.
Where possible, moving a group of children to the 2nd mat will be considered.
